Hi! I'm Ruby.

I help kids develop reading, numeracy, and spatial skills.

I'm the founder of Spatial Learners. I have a background as a research scientist, book editor, and Science teacher. I left the academe to raise my little boy named Yuno and pursue my passion for instructional design.

I live in a small house on the side of a mountain in Wellington, New Zealand. I spend most days playing with my little one, reading books, and creating educational resources for children ages 5  to 7.

My Story: Why did I create Spatial Learners?

Before I began creating educational resources for children, I was teaching organic chemistry to university students. Many of these students had a hard time visualizing what happens to organic molecules when they are involved in chemical reactions. I tried my best to help them by giving more practice problems. Well, that didn't really help. They just felt more frustrated, defeated, and helpless. Many of them failed the course and changed majors. I really wish I knew what I know now.

Spatial ability is one of the important keys to success in STEAM disciplines. In organic chemistry, spatial abilities are needed in solving problems that require manipulation of 2D and 3D representations of molecules. If I could turn back time, I should have created a spatial training intervention program for my struggling learners.

As Maya Angelou said, "When you know better, you do better." Thanks, Maya! There's my answer: I need to create a spatial training program. But wait, when should I start helping my learners with their spatial skills? ...when they're in their late teens? I read many books and research papers and they all made me realize one thing: I need to start with children. Spatial reasoning is one of the key predictors of whether children will be successful in a STEAM-related career.

And so... Spatial Learners was born. This is my life project. It is slowly growing and evolving as I continue learning and getting better. I hope you join me in creating wonderful learning spaces where children become great imagineers, builders, and makers.

My Mission - and yes, I need you.

I believe that every child deserves fun, engaging, and effective programs (reading, numeracy, and spatial) as part of their education. Spatial Learners is dedicated to helping educators - just like you - implement these programs with your children.

I'm here to support you. Through my freebies, resources, blog, and upcoming training, I'll serve you.

With your help, our children can build a better future for themselves, as we guide and equip them with the right tools.
We're on this adventure together.

Thank you so much for reading and learning about Spatial Learners. I hope this is the beginning of our friendship. Let's stay connected. I'd love to hear from you and learn about your journey.

Whether you're a teacher or a homeschooling parent, I know being an educator is challenging. With so much to do, making time to look after yourself is often the first to go. So here's a little gift from my heart to yours.
